HISTORY

On the opposite side of Walsworth Road stood GW Kings Factory later this became De Havilland’s aircraft factory and still later Staples mattress factory. Farther along was a sweetshop and barbers shop, next to that was a path that led to a couple of cottages. Next to the cottages came Bowmans Flour Mill. The mill was built in 1901 and was still in use until it was demolished in 1986. Modern offices and factory units now occupy the Kings Factory, the sweetshop, barbers shop and cottages. B&Q now stands on the site of the flour mill.

Around the corner of the mill into Nightingale road once stood another pub called the Railway Junction Inn. Possibly built around 1850 this pub was taken over by Bowmans and used as a canteen for the workers. It was demolished along with the mill to provide space for B&Qs car park. A little further down Nightingale Road stood the Herts and Beds Farmers Co-operative Bacon Factory. I think this closed in the early 1970’s along with an office block next door. The Audi car showrooms now occupy the site.
