Parking: The Problem

Now to avoid misunderstanding I remind you that our survey was unofficial and the council will need to do their own survey. Our survey was done to convince the council that something had to be done about parking and to find out if there would be enough support for a parking scheme to make it worthwhile them doing an official survey.

Our rather patchy survey results gave us a real problem. Do we petition the council for a parking permit scheme for the whole of the Triangle or just Dacre road and Florence Street? "Why is that question so important?" was one of the first questions asked. Like so many things the answer is to do with history. Many of the residents remember earlier council surveys of Dacre and Radcliffe roads and other areas in Hitchin which failed to meet council rules for action. These failures were a serious disappointment to residents in favour of parking schemes and resulted in a general distrust of the council machinery. The council by its own admission does not have a policy on parking, and the police are now handing responsibility for parking enforcement over to the council which has thrown it into even deeper confusion. With a history like this our residents need to know where we stand. If a council run survey for the whole Triangle area failed to get enough people to fill out the survey form would that mean that Dacre road which is in desperate need and overwhelmingly in favour of a parking scheme be denied it?
